1. Grade and downspouts (the cheap wins)
The ground should fall away from the house — a common standard is about six inches of drop over the first ten feet — and hard surfaces like patios should pitch roughly 2% away. Before anything fancier, extend your downspouts so roof water lands several feet past the slab; a splash block by itself rarely gets it far enough. Burying those extensions out to "daylight" — an outlet at a lower point — or to a pop-up emitter keeps the yard clean. 2. French drains (for water that won't leave)
A French drain is a perforated pipe laid in a gravel-filled, fabric-lined trench that intercepts water moving through the soil and carries it to a lower outlet. It's the right tool for chronically soggy ground, a slope that seeps toward the house, or a spot that stays wet long after the surface dries. Two details make or break it: continuous fall — the pipe has to keep dropping, generally at least about 1%, or roughly an inch every eight feet — and filter fabric to keep our fine clay silt from clogging the gravel. One clay-country caution: a French drain doesn't work by soaking into the clay (clay barely percolates); it works because the gravel-and-pipe channel gives water an easier path than the soil does. 3. Surface drains: channel drains and catch basins
Where water collects on hardscape or in a defined low spot, catch it at the surface. A channel (trench) drain — a long grate set flush across a driveway apron, patio edge, or pool deck — intercepts sheeting water before it spreads. A catch basin is a boxed grate at a yard low point that feeds a solid pipe out to daylight. Both move surface water fast, which matters during North Texas's heavy-burst downpours.
4. Swales and dry creek beds (move sheet flow, keep it good-looking)

Drainage has to be built into a pool or outdoor project
