Shower Design & Waterproofing: Curbless Entries, Niches & What Goes Behind the Tile

A great shower is two projects in one: the half you see every day — glass, tile, the fall of the water — and the half you never see again once the tile goes on, which decides whether the shower lasts twenty years or rots the floor out from under it in five. Doing shower design and waterproofing right means treating both as one system, not "the pretty part" and "the plumber's problem."

Start with the entry: curbless, low-curb, or enclosed

The biggest design decision is how you step in.

A curbless (zero-entry) shower has no lip to cross — the bathroom floor runs straight into the shower. It looks modern, makes a small bath feel larger, and it's the gold standard for aging-in-place and wheelchair access. The catch is structural: with no curb to hold water in, the floor itself has to do the containing.

A low-curb walk-in keeps a modest 2–4" threshold. It's more forgiving to build and still gives you the open, single-panel-or-doorless look most people want. For a typical DFW remodel on a framed floor, it's the sweet spot.

An enclosed shower — full surround and door — is the most watertight by default and easiest to keep steamy, at the cost of that open feel. If you're still deciding whether to keep a tub at all, we cover that trade-off in walk-in shower vs. tub.

Whatever the entry, the NKBA recommends an interior of at least 36" × 36", with 36–42" of width the comfortable range for daily use. Go bigger if the plan allows — nobody regrets elbow room in a bathroom remodel.

Niches and benches: decided at rough-in, not after

The touches that make a shower feel custom are planned before a single tile is set.

A recessed niche — the built-in shelf for bottles — is framed and blocked during rough-in, between the studs, then waterproofed as carefully as the wall around it. A niche is literally a hole in your wall — a favorite leak point when it isn't membraned right. Decide its size and placement against your tile layout now — you can't add one later without reopening the wall.

A bench is the same story — the NKBA guideline is a seat at least 15" deep and 17–19" off the floor. It has to be framed, pitched slightly so water sheds off it, and waterproofed on every face. Floating (wall-hung) benches look lighter but need solid blocking behind them.

Drains and glass: the parts you'll actually touch

Center vs. linear drains. A traditional center drain sits in the middle, and the floor slopes toward it from four directions — which is why center-drain floors use smaller mosaic tile that can bend around that pitch. A linear drain is a channel (usually 24–60") set at one wall or the entry, so the whole floor slopes in a single plane. That lets you run large-format tile with far fewer cuts, and it's the drain of choice for curbless showers — a channel can catch water before it escapes onto the bathroom floor.

Frameless glass is the clean, minimal look — thick tempered panels, little hardware. It needs dead-level, plumb tile to seat against, one more reason the rough carpentry matters as much as the finish.

Rain heads and body sprays are wonderful and thirsty. Several outlets can outrun a standard supply line and single valve, so they're planned into the rough-in — a bigger supply, a high-capacity or thermostatic valve, a water heater that keeps up — not bolted on at the end.

What goes behind the tile — the part that matters most

Here's the truth the glossy photos never mention: tile and grout are not waterproof. Water passes through grout, especially over years. The system behind the tile is what keeps your house dry, and it has three jobs to get right.

1. Slope to the drain. Water has to be led to the drain at every layer, never allowed to pond. The standard is ¼" per foot (per the IPC, echoed in the TCNA Handbook). In a traditional buried-liner pan that means a pre-slope built under the liner, so water that reaches the liner runs to the drain's weep holes instead of sitting there. In a modern topical-membrane system, the slope is formed in the base beneath the sheet. Skipping the pre-slope is the number-one shortcut that dooms a shower — water pools under the tile with nowhere to go.

2. A continuous waterproofing membrane. This is the barrier that actually stops water, and it comes in two families, both tested to the ANSI A118.10 standard for bonded waterproofing membranes:

  • Sheet membranes — a bonded fabric/poly sheet set in thin-set (e.g., Schluter Kerdi). Consistent thickness, waterproof the moment it's on.
  • Liquid-applied membranes — rolled or troweled on in multiple coats with cure time between (e.g., RedGard, Hydro Ban). Great around odd shapes, but only as good as the film thickness the installer actually builds.

Either is excellent installed to spec — continuous, lapped, and carried up the walls and through the niche. If a contractor can't name the membrane system they use, that's a flag.

3. A drain that matches the membrane. The drain and the membrane have to be designed for each other. A traditional clamping-ring drain sandwiches a pan liner between two flanges below the mortar bed — the proven method for a buried liner. A bonded-flange drain has an integrated flange built for topical sheet or liquid membranes, which bond directly to it with thin-set at the surface. Put a topical membrane on a clamping-ring drain without the right adapter and you've married two systems that don't talk to each other — a classic leak source. (The plumber who sets that drain and ties it into a properly vented waste line is a state-licensed trade in Texas — one of the few genuinely licensed trades on your job.)

Why a failed waterproofing job is so expensive

A bad membrane doesn't announce itself — no dramatic flood, just water wicking day after day into the framing and subfloor behind the pretty tile. By the time you notice a soft spot underfoot, a musty smell, or tile popping loose, the studs and subfloor may already be rotted, and the fix is a demolition, not a patch. That's why waterproofing is the last place to cut corners.

Curbless means recessing the floor

Because a curbless shower has no curb to contain water, the floor itself has to be lowered so it slopes to the drain and still finishes flush with the bathroom. On a framed floor that means dropping the joists or recessing the subfloor under the shower; on a slab, recessing the concrete or forming the slope into it. It's real structural work — why a curbless build costs more than a curbed one — and exactly what a design-build team plans from the framing up, not mid-tile. It's also why curbless pairs so naturally with a linear drain in a walk-in shower.

What it costs in the DFW metroplex

Real, current ranges — national industry data, not a quote from us; DFW tracks close:

  • Walk-in shower, all in: around $9,000 on average, most projects $6,000–$12,000 (Angi, 2026).
  • Custom tiled walk-in: roughly $3,500–$15,000; a curbless custom-tiled build runs higher, about $14,000–$20,000 (Angi).
  • Tile installation: $7–$25 per sq. ft. for floor and walls (HomeGuide).
  • Waterproofing membrane: roughly $500–$1,000 for a sheet system, $50–$800 for liquid (HomeGuide) — a small line item that protects the entire project.

Frequently asked

Is tile waterproof on its own?
No. Tile and grout let water through — grout especially, over time. The membrane and sloped pan *behind* the tile keep water out of your framing and floor. Sealing grout helps with staining, not waterproofing.
Sheet membrane or liquid — which is better?
Both are excellent when installed to the ANSI A118.10 standard they're tested against. Sheet gives consistent thickness and is waterproof immediately; liquid is faster around complex shapes but depends on the installer building up enough coats. Install quality matters far more than the format.
Do I really need a curbless shower for accessibility?
It's the best option for wheelchair and walker access and for aging in place, but it requires recessing the floor so it can drain without a curb. If accessibility isn't a driver, a low 2–4" curb waterproofs more simply and costs less.
How long should a properly built shower last?
A correctly built tile shower — real pre-slope, continuous membrane, matched drain — should last 20+ years. Most failures aren't about age; they trace back to a skipped pre-slope, a nicked membrane, or a mismatched drain from a rushed install.
