Grab bars — and the blocking nobody sees
Grab bars are the highest safety-per-dollar item in the room, and the most commonly botched. A real grab bar is not a towel bar: the ADA standard calls for bars that withstand 250 pounds of force, mounted 33–36 inches above the floor, 1¼"–1½" in diameter, with 1½" of clearance to the wall so a hand wraps fully around.
None of that matters if the bar is screwed into drywall. To hold 250 pounds, a bar has to anchor into wall studs or into solid blocking — typically ¾-inch plywood or 2x lumber fastened across the studs behind the tile, before the wall closes up. Plastic drywall anchors are not a substitute and should never carry a person's weight.
Here is the single best money-saving tip in this guide: add blocking during any bathroom remodel, even if you do not want grab bars yet. Wider doorways and room to turn
A wheelchair or walker needs a 32-inch clear opening at minimum — and because a swung door eats a couple of inches, that usually means hanging a 36-inch door. A cheap fix when framing cannot move: swing-clear (offset) hinges let a door open fully out of the opening and recover up to about 2 inches of clear width for the price of hardware. Inside, the target is a 60-inch turning circle (or a 60" x 60" T-shaped space for a three-point turn) so a wheelchair can reverse without a shuffle. Phasing it is completely legitimate — as long as the blocking goes in early.
Who should build it
