Do You Need an Electrical Panel Upgrade for Your Remodel?

Most remodels don't start out as electrical projects. You want an open kitchen, a primary-suite addition, or a garage turned into living space — and somewhere in the planning, the conversation turns to the gray box on the side of the house. That's normal. A serious remodel adds electrical load and new circuits, and it triggers code requirements that older panels were never built to meet.

Here's how an experienced design-build remodeler reads the electrical side of a project: why a remodel so often surfaces a panel upgrade, the honest signs your service is undersized or unsafe, what the work involves, and what an electrical panel upgrade for a remodel realistically costs in 2026.

Why a remodel so often triggers an electrical upgrade

Three forces push a remodel into panel territory.

New circuits. Kitchens and additions are circuit-hungry. A modern kitchen alone needs multiple dedicated 20-amp small-appliance circuits, plus dedicated lines for the range, dishwasher, disposal, microwave, and often a beverage fridge. An addition adds a whole room's worth of lighting, receptacles, and HVAC. Every one of those lands on your panel — and a panel that's already full simply has no room left.

Modern loads. The way we power a home has changed. An induction range, a Level 2 EV charger, and an electric heat-pump system are all heavy 240-volt loads. A home Level 2 charger typically wants a dedicated 240-volt circuit in the 40–60-amp range, heat pumps commonly draw 30–60 amps, and an induction range wants roughly 40–50 (EnergySage, Qmerit). A 200-amp service can often carry a couple of these — but "often" isn't "always," and the only way to know is a load calculation by a licensed electrician (EnergySage). Stack two or three of them onto a 100-amp panel and you're out of capacity.

Code. Permitted remodel work is held to the currently adopted electrical code, and the 2023 NEC expanded protection requirements. GFCI now covers all kitchen receptacles (not just the ones over the counter), along with the usual wet-area spots like bathrooms and laundry, and arc-fault (AFCI) protection is required on the branch circuits feeding living areas such as kitchens, bedrooms, and laundry rooms (Legrand, WireRef). When you extend or add circuits, the inspector checks the new work against today's code, not the code from when the house was built. The adopted edition varies from city to city across the metroplex, which is one more reason to have a licensed electrician confirm what your jurisdiction requires.

Signs your panel or service is due for an upgrade

Not every remodel needs a new panel. These are the honest signals that yours might:

  • An old fuse box. Screw-in fuses instead of breakers usually mean 60-amp (sometimes 100-amp) service that predates modern demand. It isn't automatically dangerous, but it's almost always undersized for a remodel.
  • Only 100-amp service. New homes are typically built with 200-amp service. If you're on 100 amps and adding load, capacity is your constraint.
  • A known problem-brand panel. Federal Pacific (Stab-Lok) and Zinsco panels have been the subject of independent testing that raised concerns about breakers failing to trip. Neither was ever formally recalled, but home inspectors and electricians routinely recommend having them evaluated by a licensed electrician, and replacement is a common outcome (ExpertCE). If you have one, there's no need to panic — but do get it looked at by a professional rather than guessing.
  • Aluminum branch wiring. Homes built or expanded roughly 1965–1973 sometimes used solid aluminum branch wiring, which expands and loosens at connections over time. The CPSC found that pre-1972 aluminum-wired homes are 55 times more likely to have a connection reach "fire hazard conditions" than copper-wired homes (CPSC). There are proven repairs — but they're specialized work for a qualified electrician, never a DIY fix. If you suspect aluminum wiring, have it assessed.
  • Frequent breaker trips, a warm panel, flickering, or a burning smell. Recurring nuisance trips, or any heat or smell at the panel, are the system telling you it's stressed. That's a reason to call an electrician now, not after the remodel.

None of this is cause for alarm on its own — it's cause for an evaluation, which is exactly the kind of thing a remodel is a good moment to sort out.

What a panel or service upgrade actually involves

There are two different jobs people tend to lump together. A panel replacement swaps the breaker box — new panel, new breakers — usually keeping the same service size. A service upgrade raises capacity (typically to 200 amps) and can also involve the meter base, the service-entrance cable, the mast, grounding, and coordination with the utility to reconnect the service drop. A remodel that's adding real load often needs the second, not just the first.

Either way, the work starts with a load calculation to size the service to your actual and planned demand, and it runs through the permit process. Here's the part that matters in Texas: individual electricians are state-licensed — the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) issues Residential Wireman, Journeyman, and Master licenses — and in practice the licensed electrician pulls the electrical permit, then the city inspects the work before it's energized and closed up (TDLR). That inspection is your independent verification that the panel feeding your home was done to code.

What it costs in 2026

Real, current ranges (national industry data — not a quote from The Remo Guys; your number depends on your home, your utility, and how much load you're adding):

  • Straight panel replacement: about $520–$2,200, average near $1,350, per Angi's 2026 data — rising toward $4,500 when the job also relocates the panel, adds a breaker box, or expands amperage (Angi).
  • Upgrading service to 200 amps: roughly $1,300–$2,500 (HomeGuide, 2026).
  • Replacing an old fuse box with a 200-amp breaker panel: about $2,000–$4,000 (HomeGuide).
  • When old branch wiring also needs work — cloth, knob-and-tube, or aluminum remediation — the total can climb to $4,500–$8,000 or more (HomeGuide).

A quick, honest note on incentives: federal tax credits and utility rebates for electrical and electrification upgrades do exist, but the rules change frequently — and some have recently changed or expired — so confirm current eligibility with a tax professional and don't budget around a guaranteed amount.

Design the electrical in — don't bolt it on

The costliest way to handle electrical is to discover it halfway through demolition, when the drywall's open, the range is on order, and the panel turns out to be full. The better way is to design it in from the start. Do I always need a panel upgrade to remodel?
No. Plenty of remodels run fine on an existing 200-amp panel with open capacity. You need an upgrade when you're adding significant load (an EV charger, heat pump, or induction range), when the panel is full, or when it's an undersized or problem-brand panel. Is a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel dangerous — do I have to replace it?
Independent testing has raised safety concerns about both, and neither was ever recalled.
