Pools & Outdoor Living in Colleyville, TX

The whole backyard as one coordinated system — not just the pool.

A pool is the easy part of a Colleyville backyard. On lots that run from a half-acre to well over one, the pool shares the yard with a covered kitchen, a deck, a pergola, drainage, grading, and soil moving under all of it — and the backyards that still look right in ten years are planned as one system, not a hole in the ground with features scattered around it.

The ground under the whole yard

Colleyville sits in the Eastern Cross Timbers, so most backyards here are sandy loam over a clay subsoil rather than the deep Blackland clay farther east. That top layer drains well, but the clay beneath still swells and shrinks with the seasons, working on a pool shell, a concrete deck, and a patio slab just as it works on the house. Built by separate crews to separate specs, those pieces tend to crack apart at the seams. Coordinating the shell, the decking, and the footings for a pergola or outdoor kitchen so they move together — or are deliberately isolated — is the single biggest reason a backyard ages well.

Water, the creeks, and the floodplain

Drainage is the other constant, and in Colleyville it's more than a formality. Big Bear Creek and Little Bear Creek and their tributaries thread through the city, and lots backing to a creek corridor can sit within a FEMA flood hazard area or a drainage easement — which means a pool or structure there may need a floodplain review before the building permit issues. Finding that out at the design table, not at inspection, is the difference between a summer install and a stalled one.

A pool is a trades project

A pool builder builds the pool — but the pool is one system in a backyard full of them. The bonding and lighting are state-licensed electrical work, the gas line to a grill or fire feature is licensed plumbing, and the deck drainage, the pergola footings, and the grading all have to be owned by someone. That coordination — the whole backyard, not just the water — is where a general contractor earns the role, so the pieces feel like one place instead of five projects sharing a fence.

Permitting and contractor registration

Backyard work runs through Colleyville Community Development — Building Inspections at 100 Main Street, with the pool, electrical, gas, and any structure inspected as the job moves. Colleyville keeps the whole process online: a contractor has to register through the city's Tyler EnerGov Citizen Self Service portal at selfservice.colleyville.com before pulling any permit, and the city accepts neither that registration nor the permit applications by email or mail. Every crew is on file in CSS before a permit issues.
