And an impervious deck poured a few feet from the house changes how water moves around a foundation on reactive clay: it has to slope its two percent away from the home, so that grading decides whether the yard sheds water or funnels it at your slab.

Barriers, permits, and the power the yard needs

An in-ground pool is a permitted construction project, not a landscaping upsell — it pulls building, electrical, and plumbing permits, and code requires a barrier at least 48 inches high around the entire pool. Forney requires every contractor to register through its MyGov portal before a permit issues; general, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing trades register at no charge, and — worth knowing on an outdoor project — only irrigation contractors pay a fee, a flat $30 to register the sprinkler work. Inspection requests then go to the city's dedicated voicemail line (972-564-7380), separate from the main office. In Devonshire, Gateway Parks, and Clements Ranch, an HOA committee reviews fence, deck footprint, and any pergola or cabana first.
