North Texas gives you the better part of the year outdoors, and in Mesquite the backyard is where a lot of the living happens — from spring through a long, hot summer. Outdoor living here runs the range: a covered patio that finally makes the yard usable in July, an outdoor kitchen, a pergola and fire feature, or a full pool-and-spa build. What the yard can hold depends a lot on the neighborhood — and what lasts depends on building it for Mesquite's soil and sun, not just staging it for a photo.
What Mesquite backyards can hold
The compact lots of Town East Estates and the older 75149 streets favor efficient moves — a covered patio, a built-in grill, a plunge pool or spa that fits a modest yard. The larger lots in Creek Crossing Estates, Park at Creek Crossing, and the newer master-planned communities like Solterra and Talia have room for the full program: a resort-style pool, a covered outdoor kitchen, and real landscaping. Solterra's own amenities set a high bar for what neighbors expect a backyard to do. Matching the build to the lot — and to drainage — is the first design decision.
Pools, patios, and Blackland clay
Expansive clay is as much a factor outside as in. A pool shell and a patio slab both sit in soil that swells and shrinks, so a pool needs proper engineering and a patio needs correct base prep and control joints or it heaves and cracks within a few seasons. Drainage is the other half: a new slab or pool deck changes where stormwater goes, and it has to be graded away from both your foundation and the neighbor's. Done right, the hardscape protects the house; done carelessly, it channels water straight at the slab.
Pools mean permits and safety code
A pool or spa is a building-permit job, not a handshake with a crew, filed online through Mesquite's Citizen Self Service (CSS) portal to the Building Inspection division on N. Galloway Ave. As with any residential permit in Mesquite, the applicant — homeowner or contractor alike — first has to set up a "Professional License" registration in CSS and upload the required state license and/or photo ID. Pool builds carry real safety code: a compliant barrier or enclosure around the water, and bonding and grounding of the pool's electrical, which a state-licensed electrician handles and the city inspects.
One team for the whole yard
An outdoor project quietly pulls in several trades — concrete, gas for the kitchen and fire feature, electrical for the pool and lighting, sometimes a structural cover tied to the house — and a backyard falls apart at the seams between them when nobody owns the whole thing. A design-build team designs the space, coordinates the licensed trades, handles the permit, and warranties the result. The Remo Guys is an Allen-based design-build — insured and bonded, working across the DFW metroplex since 2019 — serving Mesquite as a team that drives in to build the whole yard, not a local storefront.
