A pool in Garland is never just a pool. Drop a shell into a backyard here and you've changed how water moves across a lot sitting on Blackland Prairie clay that reacts to every shift in soil moisture. That's why the backyards that age well in Garland are planned as one outdoor-living system — pool, decking, drainage, grading, shade structure, and outdoor kitchen designed together, not bolted onto the yard one trade at a time. On Garland's larger lots especially, the backyard is a coordination problem first and a pool second.
Garland backyards, and what they're working with
Garland's better pool candidates are its roomier lots. The newer, larger parcels around Firewheel and Country Club Estates near Lake Ray Hubbard have space for a full outdoor room, not just a pool, while the mature lots in Springpark and central Garland come with established trees and grades a new pool has to work around. The Duck Creek greenbelt and the lake mean some yards already have real drainage to manage before a shovel goes in. Knowing what your lot — and its slope — can hold is step one.
The clay under the deck
Here's what a rendering won't tell you: on Blackland Prairie clay, the deck, coping, and any patio have to slope their two percent away from the house, or you've built a channel that pushes runoff straight at your slab. The dig itself reshapes the lot — spoil to place, groundwater to manage, a finished grade that has to send water somewhere sensible. A pool planned without whole-lot grading can leave one corner of a foundation soaked while the rest dries, the exact uneven-moisture condition that cracks slabs on reactive clay. On these lots the drainage plan carries the whole design.
Barriers, permits, and registration
A residential pool in Garland pulls a building permit through the Building Inspection Department (800 Main Street), filed at my.garlandtx.gov or the permit counter and scheduled for inspection at 972-205-2300, and it has to meet the code's barrier and fencing rules before it can be filled and used. Garland requires the contractor to be registered with Building Inspection before the permit issues, the general contractor included and not just the state-licensed trades, no exceptions (a homeowner doing their own work files an affidavit). The patio cover, pergola, and outdoor kitchen with its gas and electrical runs each carry their own permit rather than riding along free with the pool.
Why a pool builder alone isn't the whole answer
A good pool builder delivers a sound shell and a handsome deck. But nobody inside that scope is paid to own whether the deck drainage, the gas line to the outdoor kitchen, the electrical to the pergola, and the lot grading all work together — or whether the finished yard still sheds water away from the foundation. That coordination across trades is the general contractor's job — the whole-picture reason to treat the backyard as one project. The Remo Guys builds pools and outdoor living across Garland as one coordinated system, insured, bonded, and city-registered, since 2019.
